GRIMOIRES

'Grimoires'or Magic Books of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were far too expensive for most Cunning Folk. However, excerpts from them were published in cheap publications and pamphlets. These were eagerly purchased by Cunning Folk, usually by 'mail-order' from London publishers, who used the information on charms and spells to great effect.
The most popular book, amongst Cunning Folk, at the time was Reginald Scot's 'Discoverie of Witchcraft' published in 1584, although it was intended to dismiss the belief in witches and witchcraft, they found the spells listed in it of great use.
Much later in 1820 John George Hohman's 'Pow Wow or Long Lost Friend' was published in America, containing many charms and spells.
